An almighty grapefruit
A short history of grapefruits
The history and origin of the grapefruit is a bit of a mystery. This fruit is most probably a hybrid of pomelo and sweet orange. In 17th century, Captain James Shaddock brought the grapefruit from Polynesia to Barbados. Its current name comes from the English words “grape” and “fruit” which allude to the fact that the fruit grows in bunches resembling grapes.
Grapefruit is grown in the subtropics. Its trees reaches 6-15 metres and bear round fruits up to 15 centimetres in diameter.
